M. Butterfly - Santa Fe Opera

Song LiLing’s Quipao

Kangmin Justin Kim as Song LiLing

Song LiLing (played by Kangmin Justin Kim) wears this quipao for a performance at the Peking Opera. This gown was assembled and lined by another team. Myself and at least four other apprentices worked together to apply several yards of trim by hand for finishing: the first layer, a stripe of bias-cut green silk, applied with a slip stitch; and the second layer, braided gold trim, applied with a small whip stitch.

Revolutionary Opera Uniform

Megan Esther Grey as Worker, Soprano-Alto Chorus

The ‘Revolutionary Opera’ sequence of the new M. Butterfly opera, involved a large number of chorus members marching on stage in Mao-era uniforms, then moving to a secondary scene for the trial of Song LiLing. I assembled and finished this uniform alone. It is nearly identical to other uniforms worn by chorus members and Song Liling, and all are made from a thin but durable silk.
